1. Choose The Right Platform

Do you want your portfolio to demonstrate yourself effectively about what you offer and who you are? If yes, you have to choose the right platform to build your portfolio (Thiefels, 2018).

  • Web designer: You will want to create a website using a service like PageCloud, that offers flexibility in design and overall look.
  • Product portfolio: Products that you make and sell, choose an eCommerce-based platform, like Shopify. A platform like shoppe can make selling from your site easy.
  • Photography portfolio: Use a platform with a lot of templates and galleries for showcasing images, like Squarespace.
  • Marketer or writer: You can create a website that suits you using a WordPress template. WordPress template will give you flexibility in design and customisations while making it easy to scale your site as your business grows.

2. Keep It Simple

Upon showing your works, less is more. The projects or works that you are presenting are suggested to present in a straightforward format on one web page, with the option to look at each individually in order to view more details and give people more understanding what your work about. The lack of captions means all your attention is focused on the photos. However, when you hover over an image, a caption will pop up. Upon clicking on the image will bring you to the description of the shoot, and additional photos. Besides, create clean lines, leave white space, and don’t clutter the page (Frost, n.d.; Thiefels, 2018).

3. Showcase your Best Work

Choose the works that represent your core strengths, industry experience, technical ability and range. When building a portfolio, the most common mistakes are including every little project, a portfolio really isn’t about quantity but quality. Even if you included just one, massive, awesome of your work, it would still be better than including 20 small projects. Make sure the works no more than five years old, and always ensure your portfolio content will appeal, relevant to different employers (Half, 2019; Schaferhoff, 2019).

4. Choose The Best Quality

Quality is utmost importance as your website is representing you, your brand and your business. Quality is not only saying how good is your work and also the images’ resolution. When designing your portfolio, always use the best images, highest quality themes. If it is messy and cheap, a negative impression will be given by the visitors on the spot (Thiefels, 2018).

5. Categories Your Works

The way of helping the visitors of your portfolio easy to navigate is categories. If you are showing every single of your works on one page, it will be too much, and overwhelming. Furthermore, categories can show your range. For instance, you’re a marketing generalist who does a different range of work like social media strategy, press outreach, and blog copy; you probably want to categorise your work. Take Beth Howard‘s portfolio site as a reference (Frost, n.d.).

6. Responsive Web

Nowadays, adults in the US spend more time-consuming content on mobile than on the desktop. For that reason, it is better to make sure that your portfolio also looks good on iPhones, Android devices, tablets (Schaferhoff, 2019). In short, make sure your portfolio site is responsive.
